Research Assistant on Inverse problems (IP) – DesCartes WP2

Job offer posted on 28 May 2024

DESCARTES PROGRAM

The DesCartes programme is developing a hybrid AI, combining Learning, Knowledge and Reasoning, which has good properties (need for less resources and data, security, robustness, fairness, respect for privacy, ethics), and demonstrated on industrial applications of the smart city (digital energy, monitoring of structures, air traffic control).

The program brings together 80 permanent researchers (half from France, half from Singapore), with the support of large industrial groups (Thales SG, EDF SG, ESI group, CETIM Matcor, ARIA etc.).

The research will take place mainly in Singapore, at the premises of CNRS@CREATE, with a competitive salary and generous funding for missions.

DESCRIPTION

Inverse problems (IP), where the goal is to estimate unknown latent parameters given the model dynamics and some observation data, are key challenges in many science and engineering disciplines. In these settings, we typically have rich domain knowledge on the model dynamics, such as the form of governing partial differential equations (PDEs). In this role, the research assistant (RA) will be working closely with other researchers to develop data-efficient, physics-informed methods to solve inverse problems of practical science and engineering settings, building on state-of-the-art tools such as physics-informed neural networks and neural operators that makes use of both data and prior physics domain knowledge, as well as approximation methods that can be practically implemented on real-life massive and noisy settings.

EXPERIENCE & QUALIFICATIONS

  • A Bachelor’s degree in computer science and engineering, statistics, math, data science, operations research or other related disciplines from a reputable university and a strong academic track record (especially in math, statistics, and algorithms courses)
  • He/she must have a strong proficiency in programming.
  • A good publication record in the premier machine learning and AI conferences and/or journals is a bonus.
